Beds and Bars Ltd, the leading operator of backpacker hostels, bars and pubs across Europe, announces the retirement of Murray Roberts after nearly 3 decades with the group, the last 10 as Managing Director, where his industry knowledge, commitment to excellence and management style has seen Beds & Bars thrive in the cyclical world of hospitality.

His journey with the Group is marked by significant milestones, including the expansion of Beds and Bars across major cities in Europe, doubling turnover and tripling EBITDA in his time as MD. He has been an unfailing mentor to the next generation of management and we are delighted that his advice will still be available in the future.

Murray has worked extensively within the wider youth travel industry as a vocal and well respected voice. This includes many roles; a long standing Board Member of BETA, a Director of Pub Aid, and the set up of World Hostels committee during the pandemic to champion the industry.

Reflecting on his time as Managing Director, Murray said he was “filled with pride and gratitude to have been part of an exciting journey and was deeply thankful for the incredible team, partners, and guests who have been part of this adventure.” While he is stepping down from a day to day role to take a few months well earned rest he is delighted to still keep in contact with his many friends and colleagues both in Beds & Bars and the wider sector.

Keith Knowles, CEO  and Founder of Beds and Bars, praised Murray’s contributions to the Group and the wider sector saying, “Murray’s industry knowledge and leadership has been instrumental in shaping Beds and Bars into the dynamic and thriving organisation it is today. His wisdom and strategic perspective will still be available in the future to help us navigate the exciting opportunities ahead.”

With Murray’s retirement the group has restructured its experienced senior team, appointing Luke Knowles as the new CEO, while Keith Knowles the Founder steps into the role of Executive Chairman, supported by Gemma Placey; Finance Director, Sophie Herbert; Sales and Marketing Director, Chris Lambert; newly appointed to Chief Operating Officer and Jan Kroezen newly appointed to Chief Support Officer. The team is committed to its mission of providing exceptional hospitality and unforgettable experiences for travellers around the globe. They harbour a renewed focus on innovation, customer experience, and sustainable expansion.
