We spoke with Ricardo Arroyo, Assistant General Manager at Belushi’s Alexanderplatz in Berlin, about his experience with the Rising Stars Program in 2023. Encouraged by his general manager, Ricardo initially hesitated but was persuaded by insights from fellow Beds and Bars colleagues who had completed it. Newly promoted to Assistant General Manager, he expected to pick up useful skills, but the program proved far more transformative than he imagined.

About Rising Stars:

Rising Stars is a 12-month inclusive program designed for various driven team members to grow, connect, and unlock career opportunities. Participants build lasting bonds with colleagues across the company while developing an idea to positively impact the business. Along the way, they gain skills in finance, leadership, public speaking, sales, and marketing, culminating in a 20-minute presentation with a Q&A to a panel of senior leaders.

Q. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your story with Beds and Bars?

A. Of course! My name is Ricardo Arroyo, and I’m originally from Chile, where I was born and raised. After completing my studies, I felt a strong urge to explore the world, which eventually led me to Berlin, a city I’ve proudly called home since 2019. My journey with Beds and Bars began as a guest, where I fell in love with the vibrant atmosphere. Inspired by the experience, I decided to join the team. Starting in housekeeping, I progressed through roles in reception, the bar, and later as a supervisor before taking on my current position as Assistant General Manager. It’s been an incredible journey!

Q. What inspired you to join the Rising stars program?

A. At first, my manager encouraged me to apply, but I wasn’t sure if the program was anything for me. I thought it was more suited for others in different roles. However, after learning more about it, I was drawn to the challenge and the opportunity for personal and professional growth. The idea of pushing myself to  improve really resonated with me. It turned out to be a great fit, and despite some tough moments, it was an incredibly rewarding experience.

Q. Can you describe a memorable moment or achievement from your experience in the program?

A. There are so many! One of the first ones that came to my mind was in Barcelona, where we had to do the famous public speaking exercise that everyone dreads. We had to present our ideas in the middle of a busy area, and I was incredibly nervous. But once I started speaking about my project, I realized I knew it inside and out. I stopped worrying about what others were thinking, like e.g. “Who is this crazy guy at the top of the stairs?”, and just focused on sharing my idea – my hard work. The moment I felt confident and it all flowed was unforgettable.

Q. How has Rising Stars helped you grow personally and professionally?

A. The program really pushes you out of your comfort zone. For example, during the first week, we visited the Royal Navy in Dartmouth, and that completely challenged me. I thought I knew what I was doing, I was feeling confident, but that week made me realize that even when I felt sure of my abilities, there was always room for growth. The program also helped me discover strengths I didn’t know I had, and it taught me to push past my limits, building confidence in ways I didn’t expect. These are some skills that I use in my day to day life, but also at work.

Q. In what ways has the program shaped your career aspirations / How has the Rising Stars program impacted your career development?

A. Rising Stars provided me with valuable tools and leadership skills that have helped me in my role as Assistant General Manager. I had just stepped into the position a few months before the program started, so it was perfect timing. While it didn’t change my career direction, it certainly gave me the confidence and skills to perform better in my job and helped shape my aspirations moving forward.

Q. What skills or knowledge have you gained from Rising Stars that you find most valuable in your role?

A. Don’t underestimate the power of preparation! Before Rising Stars, I relied a lot on improvisation, I didn’t prepare much, and I felt it usually worked for me. But in Barcelona, I realized that wasn’t enough. I froze during some exercises, and it hit me that preparation is key. For my pitch in the plaza, I took the time to prepare only bullet points, but it made all the difference. It taught me that you can’t always rely on spontaneity; putting in the effort and preparing properly is crucial.

Q. What advice would you give to new participants in the Rising Stars program?

A. My advice would be to stay open-minded and don’t be afraid to push yourself or to be pushed as well. Preparation is essential – make sure you put in the time and effort because things won’t just happen on their own. Even when you’re busy, find time to work on the tasks, and don’t hesitate to ask for help or seek feedback from others. The program moves quickly, time goes so fast. Staying engaged will help you make the most of it.
